Recovery of 29-s Oscillations in HST/FOS Eclipse Observations of the Cataclysmic Variable UX Ursae Majoris

چکیده
Low amplitude (≃ 0.5%) 29-s oscillations have been detected in HST/FOS eclipse observations of the nova-like cataclysmic variable UX UMa. These are the same dwarf nova-type oscillations that were originally discovered in this system by Warner & Nather in 1972. The 29-s oscillations are seen in one pair of eclipse sequences obtained with the FOS/PRISM in November of 1994, but not in a similar pair obtained with the FOS/G160L grating in August of the same year. The oscillations in the PRISM data are sinusoidal to within the small observational errors and undergo an approximately −360 phase shift during eclipses (i.e. one cycle is lost). Their amplitudes are highest at pre-eclipse orbital phases and exhibit a rather gradual eclipse whose Based on observations with the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope, obtained at the Space Telescope Science Institute, which is operated by the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy, Inc., under NASA contract NAS 5-2655

HST/FOS Eclipse Observations of the Nova-like Cataclysmic Variable UX Ursae Majoris
We present and analyze Hubble Space Telescope observations of the eclipsing nova-like cataclysmic variable UX UMa obtained with the Faint Object Spectrograph. Two eclipses each were observed with the G160L grating (covering the ultraviolet waveband) in August of 1994 and with the PRISM (covering the near-ultraviolet to near-infrared) in November of the same year. The system was ∼50% brighter in...
متن کاملAn XMM-Newton observation of the nova-like variable UX UMa: spatially and spectrally resolved two-component X-ray emission
In the optical and ultraviolet regions of the electromagnetic spectrum, UX Ursae Majoris is a deeply eclipsing cataclysmic variable. However, no soft X-ray eclipse was detected in ROSAT observations. We have obtained a 38 ksec XMM-Newton observation to further constrain the origin of the X-rays. The combination of spectral and timing information allows us to identify two components in the X-ray...
متن کاملFar Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer Observations of the Dwarf Nova Sw Ursae Majoris during Quiescence
We present spectroscopic observations of the short-period cataclysmic variable SW UMa obtained by the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) satellite while the system was in quiescence. The data include the resonance lines of O vi at 1031.91 and 1037.61 8. These lines are present in emission, and they exhibit both narrow ( 150 km s ) and broad ( 2000 km s ) components. The narrow O vi e...
متن کاملAccretion Disc Evolution in DW Ursae Majoris: A Photometric Study
We present an analysis of CCD photometric observations of the eclipsing novalike cataclysmic variable DW UMa obtained in two different luminosity states: high and intermediate. The star presents eclipses with very different depth: ∼ 1.2 mag in the high and ∼ 3.4 mag in the intermediate state. Eclipse mapping reveals that this difference is almost entirely due to the changes in the accretion dis...
متن کاملPhotometry and Spectroscopy of KS Ursae Majoris during Superoutburst
We report photometric and spectroscopic observations of the SU UMa-type dwarf novae, KS Ursae Majoris, during its 2003 February superoutburst. Modulations with a period of 0.07017 ± 0.00021 day, which is 3.3% larger than the orbital period, have been found during the superoutburst and may be positive superhumps. A maximum trough-to-peak amplitude of around 0.3 magnitude is determined for this s...
